Original Opinion
My mother bought a Wii about a week ago to help her exercise. Of course, I'm a gamer, so it's naturally I went from helping her set it up, to taking over and playing the games. A few days later, I notice that Walmart was having a sale on older Wii games, and since I love a good bargain I bought a couple. Game Party was one of them, and since I haven't did a review in awhile, I figured I'll go ahead and review this since I unlocked everything.
Graphics
Terrible. I'm not sure why they didn't just let you use your Mii. Instead the game itself has 175 horrible looking characters to choose from. Most of which all look very similar, so there's not as much verity as they make it sound. The rest of the game graphics are okay, but there's a lot of poorly done designs going on in the background.
Sound & Music
The sound effects fit the games and I don't have any problem with them. However, there's only three songs that will play when playing any game. These are okay at first, but get highly annoying after awhile. The beats are just computer generated ones that repeat constantly throughout each song. The songs themselves are normal length, but if your playing with friends and it takes you longer then ten minutes to get bored, you'll already have cycled through the music two or three times (depending on if you went back to the main menu or not).
Darts
I'll admit that this game is one of the three main reasons why I bought the game to begin with. I like darts. I have a dart bored, but I wanted to see what it was like on the Wii. It's not so bad and it has the most verity out of all the games. You can even unlock Baseball Darts, which is good change from normal game play. So, this game gets a thumbs up.
Table Hockey
I was never a big fan of actual Table Hockey, but I went ahead and tried it out for the Wii. Who ever design this one must have never tested played it. The game is at such an awkward angle. The played is facing to the right or left, while you are viewing the game from a side view. This means that left and right, are actually up and down in the game. And of course, up and down, are actually left and right. It's very confusing and makes game play not so much. This game gets a thumbs down.
Skill Ball
Skill Ball is the same as any other basic arcade game. You roll the a ball up the bowling alley looking machine and try to make it into one of the holes. Each hole has a different point value depending on how difficult it is to get the ball into it. I love this classic arcade game. This game was of course one of the three main reasons why I bought the game. A couple of my friends had a bit of trouble and so did I when I first tried it out. The sensitivity is high and you actually have to release the button while you're still facing the controller at the ground which makes it awkward. In reality, I would release it later then that, and so I had to adjust to the game's way of doing things before I started to get a decent score. Though it was odd at first, it became a lot of fun and so this gets a thumbs up.
Hoop Shoot
I don't play a lot of sports, but when I was younger I did go through a Basketball phase. So, I was familiar with this arcade game, but wasn't sure how it would work on the Wii. Once I learned what to do I gave it a shot. It wasn't as fun as I thought it might be and it didn't take long before I figured out that you could just shake the Wii remote and easily score over 100 points. So, this game gets a thumbs down for being flawed and not very entertaining.
Ping Cup
It's just Beer Pong, but without the Beer. Probably the worse game on the entire disc. The sensitivity is terrible, the controls don't even work, and you spend most of your time swinging your arm around trying to get the game to respond and then swearing when your character throws the ball across the room instead of where you aimed it. This game gets a thumbs down for being complete shit.
Shuffle Board
It's more like table Shuffle Board, since it's not the out door version, but the concept is the same. This one is actually not that bad as long as you don't move your hand to fast. It's a game of patients and my grandma really enjoyed playing it with me. So, this game gets a thumbs up for working correctly and being a good game to bond with elders over.
Trivia
The Trivia game is self explanatory and is designed for people of all ages. You get things like; "Who's the main character in Bambi" to "What was the number one music hit in 1974". There's enough verity of questions to make it fun with a group of people and hard to memorizes all the answers. Then again, once you do that the game is no longer fun. Still it worked and was fun for awhile. This gets a thumbs up.
Final Opinion
After a quick look around the web, I found that this game got a ton of negative reviews. I'll admit that the game isn't the greatest. It lacks a lot, has terrible graphics, has terrible music, and the controls don't work very well on half the games, but I bought this game new for like $7 (USD) and it provided entertainment for a good amount of time. In the end, I wouldn't recommend this game, but if you found it at a really cheap price, it wouldn't be so bad to pick up and play with your friends. If anyone figures out the Ping Cup game, comment below and let me know if you manage to enjoy the game.
