Full Movie Review
Genres: Comedy, Science Fiction, Adventure, Space
Plot Summary
Mere seconds before the Earth is to be demolished by an alien construction crew, journeyman Arthur Dent is swept off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher penning a new edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."
Original Opinion
I remember when this movie came out. It was the talk of the town, so to speak. However, I never really felt the need to watch it. Having never heard of the books, TV show, radio broadcast, or comics until this movie came out, I had absolutely no real interest.
Special Effects
Nicely done. It made me feel like they really were in space! Even the aliens were nice looking. I personally think they did an excellent job converting this into a movie, special effects wise.
Character Development
The main character, Arthur starts off as a typical loser who is scared of adventure. Well, not really scare of it. More like he's not one to venture out of his safety zone. By the end of the movie he grows a pair and sticks up for himself. Then he actually announces that he doesn't want to be on Earth and ventures off to the end of the universe.
Soundtrack
Just your basic movie music. Everything fits where it should. I don't even see why I bother doing this part of the review any more. I guess I should mention the dolphin song was pretty interesting.
Original Media
I'm not sure what came first. I think it was originally a radio broadcast, then a series of books, and then a TV show, and then a comic, and finally this movie. I've never had any interest in the other media, but it seems like they did a decent job converting it over into a movie. Wiki claims that anything new that was added into the movie was approved by Douglas and done to help define some of the characters quicker, since a movie couldn't possibly hold everything the book(s) had.
Final Opinion
It was a decent movie. I wouldn't say it was super awesome or worth buying, but it's decent enough to watch. I would probably watch it again if it came on TV and I had nothing better to do. Truthfully, I don't see why they haven't turned this into a trilogy. There's more then enough material to do a couple of sequels. I would probably buy it if they did that and the sequels weren't half bad.
