Original Opinion
My friend Dustin got a hold of this game years ago. Probably pretty close to a decade now. I remember thinking it was really awesome and so, when I saw it for sale, I had to get it. You can actually pick it up fairly cheap these days.
Graphics
For it's time period, the graphics of this game are insanely good. Hell, even now they're still good. The anime cut scenes are all in HD and the game play itself does an excellent job trying to match them. They did a really good job with showing the bullet holes in everything. Making the entire game almost life like.
Sound & Music
Perfect for this type of game play. The voices were really nice. If I remember correctly (it's been about 9 months since I beat it) you get the choice of English dubbed or keeping the original Japanese voices. All the main cut scenes have sub titles either way, so it's not like you're missing out if you want to keep the original Japanese voices.
Storyline
It's really interesting. They even throw in a bit of flash backs to help tell the story. I haven't watch the anime yet, but I've heard many people actually tell me that the game was better then the show. If I'm remembering correctly, the game came out a few years before the anime. Anyway, the game does take a WTF twist with very little explanation on what's going on. When you think it can't get any worse, it just ends.
Battle System
Infinite ammo, because reloading takes to long. You'll never run out of bullets. You can dance around shooting like a mad man and never have to worry about dodging behind something. You literally walk through every level destroying everything and everyone. The only time you'll need to form any sort of tactic is when you're fighting bosses. However, I personally found this to be extremely entertaining.
Japanese Blade?
I couldn't help, but to be reminded of Marvel's Blade when playing this. I don't know if it's because he has an old guy giving him blood transfusions or the fact that he's kinda half dead. Maybe it's how he kills his own kind. All I really know is that if I was going to compare Gungrave to an American fictional character, I would have to say Blade.
Final Opinion
The game is insanely short and easy to beat. You can plow through this game in four to six hours. I remember it being a lot harder when I first played it, but after replaying it last summer I realized how not so hard it is. For being so short and easy, I still enjoyed every minute of it. It's just a fun game to sit down and run around shooting everything. Never having to worry about reloading makes me wish all shooter games were like that.
